UTEXAS FIRST ANNUAL COMPETITION

Overview:

We intend to have 30 people, divided into groups of 2-3, join the inaugural UTEXAS Energy trading competition. Taking place on April 6th from 8am to 3pm. The competition will unfold in three waves:

8:00 AM - Wave 1:

Students are given a scenario to create an investing thesis within energy commodities. Examples include a hurricane approaching the coast after hurricane season, or a winter storm forming in the north.

9:30 AM - First Judging:

Students present and are judged based on the risk profile, profit maximization, and viability of their strategies.

10:30 AM - Wave 2:

Students are then informed that something has happened to affect their investment thesis, such as the hurricane changing direction, or the winter storm intensifying or being disrupted. Students are given an hour to explain how they would hedge out of this situation.

11:30 AM - Second Judging:

Students present and are judged based on the risk profile, profit maximization, and viability of their strategies.

12:30 PM - Wave 3:

Similar to Wave 2, an event changes the dynamics of the investment thesis, and students are asked to navigate this new challenge.

1:30 PM - Presentations:

Students present their strategies and are judged based on the risk profile, profit maximization, and viability of their strategies.

3:00 PM - Final Results:

The final results are tallied, and the winner is announced.

UTEXAS Requirements for the Trading Competition

Judges: We are seeking judges from prominent energy firms. We require that at least one person with experience on the trading floor participate in judging the students' theses. Additionally, we welcome other professionals from your energy firm to roam the competition floor, offering advice to students who seek guidance on energy-related questions (e.g., the relationship between gas and power).

Participating firms are also expected to conduct an in-person or virtual information session prior to the competition to help prepare the participants. This can be done any thursday of March other than 3/14

Case Writers: To ensure the integrity and effectiveness of our case studies, we are inviting external experts to author our competition cases. These documents will likely be fewer than 8 pages and will significantly contribute to the development of this initiative.
